A system to map the risk of infection by Puccinia kuehnii in Brazil Agronomy
Sumida, Ciro Hideki; Fantin, Lucas Henrique; Gonçalves, Ricardo Marcelo; Canteri, Marcelo Giovanetti; Araujo, Kelly Lana; Giglioti, Éder Antônio.
Orange rust caused by the fungus Puccinia kuehnii greatly affects sugarcane and causes millions of tons of losses in production. This condition was first reported in Brazil at the end of 2009. The disease is currently present in most of the countries that produce this crop. The aim of this research was to develop risk maps of P. kuehnii infection using temperature and relative humidity data, provided by 389 automatic weather stations throughout the country. A spatial distribution analysis was carried out to assess the number of daily hours of favorable conditions for spore germination in each region. In the central-south region, where the main sugarcane producing states are concentrated, two distinct periods were observed during the three years studied....

Genetic control of partial resistance to Asian soybean rust doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v36i1.16919 Agronomy
Martins, Juliana Araújo Santos; Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Triângulo Mineiro; Juliatti, Fernando Cezar; Universidade Federal de Uberlandia.
The genetic control of rust resistance was studied using the Caiapônia x IAC-100 and Luziânia x Potenza crosses. The F2 and F3 generations were evaluated. Rust severity was quantified through visual assessment of the middle third of three leaflets per plant and performed by three different evaluators; the average score was calculated foreach individual plant. From these data, we estimated the mean and variance of the genetic components by employing the weighted least squares method. The estimated number of genes and broad- and narrow-sense heritabilities were also obtained. It was concluded that rust resistance is a characteristic controlled by 2 to 23 genes that are predominantly dominant. The estimate of narrow-sense heritability was greater than 70% for...

Passiflora morifolia, P. suberosa litoralis, and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata are three wild species with ornamental potential that occur in Brazil. These species were evaluated with the purpose of determining the effects of different shade levels on seedling emergence and initial growth. Treatment with 50% shade resulted in the highest percentage of seedling emergence and the highest emergence speed index for all three species. The 50% shade level was the best condition for growth of P. morifolia and P. palmeri var. sublanceolata seedlings because in this condition, they presented higher growth in relation to control and the other treatments. However, P. suberosa litoralis can be considered a sun species because it grew better in full sunlight and 25%...

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the interference of water excess in soil on the growth of young coffee plants of the Mundo Novo and Catuaí cultivars.Plants were subjected to the following three different substrate water availability conditions: control (well-watered), continuous substrate waterlogged, and intermittent substrate waterlogged. Several growth-related traits were evaluated over the course of 19 weeks. Based on the number and quality of the affected variables from all forms of analyses, the Catuaí cultivar showed greater sensitivity to waterlogging. Both cultivars exhibited growth inhibition in response to substrate waterlogging stress, which was exacerbated by premature leaf dropping.

Successive mini-cuttings collection in Piptocarpha angustifolia mini-stumps: effects on maturation, adventitious root induction and root vigor Agronomy
Stuepp, Carlos André; Wendling, Ivar; Koehler, Henrique Soares; Zuffellato-Ribas, Katia Christina.
The low percentage of seed germination and adventitious root induction in cuttings of Piptocarpha angustifolia has limited its silvicultural use. Thus, we studied the effect of tissue maturation on successive collections of mini-cuttings grown in a semi-hydroponic system. Likewise, we evaluated potential multiplication via the mini-cutting technique by assessing the survival and productivity of mini-stumps as well as the formation of adventitious roots and the root vigor. We made 32 sprout collections during two years in a clonal mini-garden. From these collections, mini-cutting experiments were installed throughout several seasons. Mini-cuttings of 8±1 cm long were prepared, planted in boxes with vermiculite and carbonized rice husk (1:1 v/v) and placed...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of high dilutions of Pulsatilla nigricans in dinamisations 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 CH on the vigour of soybean seeds subjected to accelerated aging. The experiment was conducted according to a randomised design with 6 treatments and 10 replicates. The treatments consisted of dinamisations 6, 12, 18, 24 and 30 CH and a distilled-water control. After the treatments, the seeds were subjected to accelerated aging (48h at 42ºC) in a growth chamber (25 ± 2ºC). The study evaluated the germination, the length of primary roots and shoots, the fresh weight of roots and shoots and the enzymatic activity of peroxidase (POX-EC1.11.1.7). The variables were analysed by ANOVA, and the means were compared using the Scott-Knott...
